As an older parent, raising a young child, I want my daughter to choose the extra-curricular activities that help her express the woman that she is becoming, and I do not want to spend valuable emotional currency attempting to force her into courses and activities that do not sync with her sense of self.
That said, the one area where I will not compromise is swim lessons. Until she at least has the essential self-rescue skills of a competent swimmer, we will take her to lessons whether she wants them or not. Luckily for us, she loves the lessons. The growth that she has shown in the last year of lessons has been deeply satisfying to watch. The confidence that she exudes when she masters one skill after another makes me look forward to the days where I snorkel side by side with her, maybe even scuba dive.
