When you have an interesting, unique or just plain weird fashion to shoot, nothing brings out the odd like a wide angle lens. Indeed, Tim Burton uses wide angle shots to great affect in all his movies.
This shot was taken at 11mm on the underrated Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 ATX Pro lens for crop format cameras. Some of my favorite and most distinctive photos have come from this inexpensive, but awesome lens.
For this shot, I got in very close to the models and used a hand held off-camera flash to add even more drama – as you can see with the shadows. The challenge was that I was working the floor at a cosplay fashion show – I had about 30 seconds to set up and take this shot – without assistance. Hence the use of a lightweight DX camera and hand held speedlites. Thanks to David Hobby from the Strobist website, I was ready for this one.
